Great North Run (Newcastle)

Course description

The world's largest half marathon, with around 60,000 runners. The point-to-point course runs from Newcastle across the iconic Tyne Bridge out to the coast at South Shields. The undulating route is toughest from miles 8 to 12 before dropping toward the sea — often into a stiff headwind at the finish.

Coach tip

Pace yourself: the second half is harder, especially the climb between miles 8 and 12. Start in a controlled way even though the downhill opening miles are tempting. The closing coastal stretch is often very windy — run it in the shelter of a group to carry you to the finish.
