Can you qualify for Kona?

The basis is the public IRONMAN results of the last few years per race plus the official IRONMAN qualification method: each age group gets one automatic World Championship slot for its winner, the remaining slots are awarded by normalized performance (age-grading against that age group’s „Kona Standard“) – since the November 2025 revision in separate pools for women and men, each sized by that gender’s share of starters in the race. The qualifying time shown is the slowest time that would typically still have earned a slot.

No. The actual cutoff time depends on the field strength on race day, the number of slots and roll-down (unclaimed slots pass down the ranking). Treat the number as a realistic guide, not a fixed limit. The value is the median across several editions; the range shows how much it varies from year to year.

From 2026 the IRONMAN World Championship for men and women takes place together again in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The Kona/Nice split (2023–2025) is history – all races listed here qualify for Kona.

Not every qualified athlete accepts their World Championship slot. A declined winner’s slot goes to second place, then to third, and after that falls into that gender’s performance pool. It is why a slightly slower time than the raw qualifying time often still makes it. How many slots are actually accepted is not published per age group – all IRONMAN has released is that 15 % of women’s and 3 % of men’s automatic slots rolled on. The roll-down time above is therefore a scenario using the rate you pick yourself, not a measurement.

The qualifying window for the 2026 World Championship (Kona, 10 Oct 2026) closes in mid-August 2026. Races before that feed Kona 2026, later races feed the 2027 edition – also held in Kona. Only 2026 is officially confirmed so far.
